At GSMS, we believe in the power of community and the importance of supporting organizations that make a meaningful impact. That's why we're thrilled to announce that for February our "We Heart Local" donation is dedicated to Girls at Work, a phenomenal non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young girls through woodworking and construction.
Girls at Work, founded in 2000 by Elaine Hamel, is on a mission to provide girls aged 8-18 with the opportunity to develop confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills through hands-on woodworking experiences. Their innovative programs offer a safe and supportive environment where girls can learn valuable life lessons while gaining practical skills in a traditionally male-dominated field.
One of the most inspiring aspects of Girls at Work is its commitment to inclusivity and diversity. The organization actively seeks to reach girls from all walks of life, including those from low-income families, girls in foster care, and those who may face other challenges. By breaking down stereotypes and providing access to resources and opportunities, Girls at Work is helping to create a more equitable future for all.
Through their workshops and programs, Girls at Work not only teaches girls how to safely and effectively use tools but also instills in them a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work. Whether it's building birdhouses, benches, or bookshelves, these young girls are learning tangible skills that will serve them well in the future, whether they choose to pursue careers in the trades or not.
But perhaps the most powerful lesson that Girls at Work imparts is the idea that girls can do anything they set their minds to. By challenging societal norms and encouraging girls to step outside of their comfort zones, the organization is helping to cultivate a generation of strong, confident, and capable young women.
Our decision to support Girls at Work this February was an easy one. We wholeheartedly believe in their mission and the incredible work they do to empower girls in our community. By contributing to their cause, we are not only investing in the futures of these young girls but also in the future of our society as a whole.
